Intro to Mirror Basics
If you are a homeowner, you may seek a
bolder use of mirror in your home. Possibilities might be a whole wall of
mirror in the living room, mirrored backsplashes in the kitchen, mirror in
furniture and shelving…or even a periscope window in the basement.
If you are an interior designer or architect, you may want to add new
sophistication to your designs. Perhaps you want to experiment with tinted
mirror, or faceted designs.
Mirrors enhance
space, capture views of nature, and amplify light. Versatile, they can
seemingly “disappear” or be a dramatic presence. They can be small,
charming decorative accents, useful allies, or large architectural
embellishments.
In the home they
can make a small bathroom resemble a spa. They can double the size of
living rooms, doubling attractive architectural features as well. A
totally mirrored entrance hall can seem infinite.
In commercial
settings they can emphasize focal points, add drama and liveliness. Tinted
mirror covering columns can make them seem less massive. A faceted,
mirrored ceiling can seem a cascade of twinkling stars.
Today’s mirrors
are manufactured from exceptionally flat, high quality glass in large
sheets in the float process. The reflective coating is usually silver,
with copper and baked on finishes in the back to ensure protection.
Once a mirror is
manufactured it must be shipped, stored, removed from storage, cut,
perhaps beveled or drilled, finished, packed and shipped again, installed
and cleaned. The process requires professionalism and care. Mirror
manufacturers are continually inventing new techniques to ensure the
highest quality product reaches you safely, and enhances and beautifies
your environment.
